Zirconium, atomic no. 40, symbol Zr, weight at 91.22, is a grayish-white metal, lustrous and exceptionally corrosion resistant. Zirconium is lighter than steel and its hardness is similar to copper.
Mainly used for piezoelectric ceramic products, domestic ceramics, refractory, electronics industry and optical glass, also in production of other Zirconium salts and etc.
Used as drying agent of printing ink and paints, also use in paper, electron, ceramics, and glass industry, pharmaceutical and cosmetic industry or as the starting material in production of other zirconium chemicals.
White non-stereotyped powder. Its crystal has many varieties. The white powder is monoclinic form; the yellow is cubic crystal, odorless and insipid. Monoclinic form is 5.85 in density, while the cubic form is 5.6. Melting point is 2715C. It is insoluble in water, but only soluble in hot concentrated hydrofluoric acid and sulfuric acid. Melting with alkali, it produces related zirconates. Therefore it is chemically stable.
